GYANVAPI MOSQUE CASE

Muslim side files a high court case after Varanasi court allows Hindu side to offer prayers at Gyanvapi Mosque.

The Muslim side has chosen to appeal the district court’s decision in the High Court after Hindus were permitted to perform prayers within the Gyanvapi mosque complex on Wednesday.

VARANASI: On Wednesday, a Varanasi court permitted prayers to be held inside the mosque complex’s “Vyas Ka Tekhana” (locked basement), marking a significant victory for the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi dispute case.

In response to a plea filed by Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas, the head priest of the Acharya Ved Vyas Peeth temple, the court issued this decision allowing worship of Shringar Gauri and other visible and invisible deities in the Gyanvapi mosque’s cellar.

On Vyas’s plea, the court had already approved the appointment of a receiver, and on January 23, the district magistrate had taken possession of the Gyanvapi mosque’s southern cellar.

The court has ordered that the requisite steel fencing be installed to allow a priest to enter and offer prayers. The order specifies that the arrangement must be made within the next seven days.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for February 8 by the court. Until then, defendants, including the management committee of the Ganvapi mosque, Anjuman Intejamia Masajid, may file their objections.

On September 25, 2023, Vyas filed a complaint to request worship of Shringar Gauri and other visible and invisible deities in the Gyanvapi mosque’s cellar and to designate DM or any other qualified individuals as the cellar’s receiver.
