New Delhi: The Maldivian Parliament was informed on Monday by President Mohamed Muizzu that his government was elected due to its demands for the withdrawal of foreign soldiers from the country, the restoration of lost territory, and the abolition of “harmful agreements.”

The two leading opposition parties boycotted Muizzu’s speech, hence his first address to the People’s Majlis (the Maldives Parliament) was only attended by 24 parliamentarians out of the 87-member House. Holding a majority in the House, they oppose Muizzu’s blatant “anti-India” turn.

Following his victory in September of last year, Muizzu declared his intention to see foreign soldiers—that is, the 77 unarmed Indian military troops stationed in the Maldives as a result of agreements between the two nations—removed from their posts.

According to the Maldivian news website Adhadhu, Muizzu stated, “The support of a large majority of the Maldivian people for our government is a support and agreement for the removal of foreign soldiers from this land, to recover the territory lost from Maldivian waters and cancel any deals that may harm the sovereignty of the Maldives.”

Muizzu declared in Parliament that the Indian military troops would be eased out, with the first group leaving the island on March 10 and the second group leaving by May 10, 2024. Muizzu made reference to the accord that the Maldivian foreign ministry declared on Friday.
